One week ago on Monday, April 26th we sponsored a table at Family Tree’s annual Great Chef’s Dinner at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley. This year’s Designers Challenge theme was New York in honor of guest Chef Alexandra Guarnaschelli from Butter Restaurant in New York. We focused our table décor on New York Taxi cabs. We were thrilled to find out that we received honorable mention for ‘Most in Keeping with the Theme’!
Behind the Scenes:
The big find; an authentic taxi sign which we positioned at the way top of the centerpiece. The first challenge was locating one, the second challenge was what do we do with it, and the third challenge was how do we light it?
Zozzie, the queen of finding everything, located the Taxi sign. Heidi’s challenge was to design a centerpiece using the sign. Inspiration came in the form of a rubber tire, which became the centerpiece base. From there everything fell into place. But how do we light this sign?
We took the challenge to our friend, Stewart Falk, who has built quite a few things for us including our awesome carts in the studio. After a bit of trial and error, Stewart strung together a series of batteries, which were housed up in the taxi sign.
In the Studio:
Heidi loves working with Photoshop and when it came time to design the signs for our table, she put her skills to good use creating a photo montage of different streets-capes. Our cab drove down Times Square, Fifth Avenue, through Central Park and up Broadway. Thanks to Just Posters for donating the printing of our signage.
Zozzie, meanwhile, combed all of New York for the perfect party favor for our guests. When we think of New York, we think of it as a city that doesn’t sleep and what better way to celebrate the city that doesn’t sleep, but with coffee. She found the perfect coffee mug; a New York TAXI mug of course. They were filled with authentic New York gourmet espresso beans for the ultimate treat. Hope the guests enjoyed!
We knew we wanted yellow and black linen, chairs, and table accents. But we didn’t want to do the expected, no checks please. So we turned to Teri, at Table Toppers and she allowed us to play in her showroom until we all found the perfect combination of skirting and banding for an elegant look. We searched high and low for just the right ribbon for the napkins and thanks to Gala Cloths we found the perfect black and white check ribbon. For the chargers, we wanted to use a charger that resembled a hubcap and found just what we were looking for at Party Rental LTD. Select Event Rentals provided us with the black Chavari Chairs. And for flowers, we turned to Carol from A Garden of Earthly Delights. The only constraint we gave her was use a monochromatic palette of yellow inside our tire base. Carol knocked it out of the park with her display and added Sun Flowers to the place setting and tulips to the chairs for the finishing touches.
